BluWood Industries

BluWood has acquired a written-off legacy industry which has been built end of the 1990s. Today, the company starts a new venture line to transform local timber sourced from OFS (Operaciones Forestales Sostenibles) and others into decks, solid and engineered flooring.

BluWood, with the support of OFS, adds economic value to secondary forests and enables new socioeconomic opportunities in rural areas of the region, which is affected by relatively low incomes outside the main tourist sites.

BluWood will work on the identification and development of export markets and it will also develop three “impact themes”:

  1. Sourcing of sustainable local timber using a “fair sourcing policy” to ensure adequate value distribution to the forest owners;
  2. The development of an innovation cluster focused on timber transformation in the framework of an emerging green economy in Costa Rica (using the large industrial space it does not fully occupy); and
  3. Propose purchase of timber, particularly hardwoods from other countries in the region and in particular from FCCF’s projects.

The forest area lies in the relatively protected Pacific side of Costa Rica where extreme weather events are rare. However, the occurrence of high-wind events is increasing, and the dry forest areas are more at risk from fire. This is the reason why it’s so important the management and monitoring process of the forest.
