On January 30th, 31st and February 1st, the “International Workshop on Sustainable Management of Secondary and Degraded Forests” took place in the Petén, Guatemala. It was done in collaboration with our partners in the region and with the support of the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency (LuxDEV) and the Luxembourg Aid & Development.
In this occasion, participants had the opportunity to share and discover management approaches to landscapes with similar features and motivations to a base model of forest management in accordance with the requirements of the Fund. During this experience, we were honored by the presence of various governmental institutions, such as the National Institute of Forests (INAB-Guatemala), the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP-Guatemala), the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC-Costa Rica), MiAmbiente (Panama). In addition, some national organisations also attended, such as the Association of Forest Communities of Petén (ACOFOP-Guatemala), SilvaInvest (Germany), and Eco Innovation Foundation (Sweden). Some international partners were also present, such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the World Resources Institute – Initiative 20×20, in addition to numerous local and regional actors active in forestry projects in Costa Rica, Mexico, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
On the other hand, participants had the opportunity to use an APP on their smartphones which allows the input of data during field work in order to facilitate the management of the forest. Thanks to GPS tracking, it is possible to locate with precision the species that are of interest for forest management purposes and can result in an improved control of the situation and richness of the environment.
During the Workshop, the participants also made use of the document elaborated with CATIE: Crecimiento de los bosques tropicales secundarios (Spanish version)
