3 August 2018, Flores, Petén
The Forestry and Climate Change Fund (FCCF) and the Fundacion Naturaleza para la Vida (NPV) signed on the 3rd of August 2018 a first agreement to finance sustainable management of secondary and degraded forests in the Petén region of Guatemala.
The management scheme offers a comprehensive support and management solution to small and medium size forest owners, financed by FCCF. The region’s forest have a high share of high value species, including native mahogany, supporting the business case for secondary and degraded forests. Yet the Petén has one of the highest deforestation rates in Central America. NPV and FCCF now propose an attractive solution to local land owners which should contribute to the recovery of the forest landscape in this important region of Guatemala.
NPV and FCCF welcomed the first forest owners into the system, Don Elias Calderon. NPV and FCCF expect more forest owners to join the management scheme in the near future.
